Sticky Gel vs. Gel That Has Not Cured
Some gel base coats, colors, and traditional top coats intentionally retain a thin tacky surface after curing. This is commonly called an inhibition layer. It does not automatically mean that the entire gel layer is uncured.
The distinction depends on the product instructions. A normal inhibition layer is usually thin and consistent while the coating underneath remains firm. Under-cured gel may feel soft, wet, unusually thick, rubbery, movable, or deeply wrinkled.

Why Is My Gel Polish Not Curing?
The cause is usually a mismatch between the product, lamp, application thickness, and curing procedure. Work through these nine checks before replacing random parts of your routine.
1 The lamp is not compatible with the gel
“UV” and “LED” are broad labels, not a guarantee that every lamp will cure every gel. Gel formulas use different photoinitiators that respond to particular wavelengths and energy levels. A lamp may illuminate and still be unsuitable for the product.
Use the lamp specified or approved by the gel manufacturer whenever possible. A matched base coat, color, top coat, and lamp provide a more predictable system.
2 The color coats are too thick
Light must penetrate the full gel layer. A heavy coat can harden near the surface while leaving softer product beneath it, especially with dark, white, opaque, glitter-heavy, or highly pigmented shades.
Apply thin, even layers and build opacity gradually. Do not force full coverage into one thick coat.
3 The curing time does not match the system
Cure times vary by formula and lamp. Thirty seconds may be correct for one system and wrong for another. A longer cure is not a universal repair because an incompatible lamp may still fail to activate the gel properly.
Follow the written directions for the exact product and lamp rather than a generic timer printed on unrelated equipment.
4 The lamp is weak, damaged, or obstructed
A damaged power supply, failed diodes, dirty reflective surfaces, or a lamp used outside its intended service life can reduce the light reaching the nails. The timer may run normally even when part of the lamp is not performing correctly.
Inspect the lamp according to its manual and stop using equipment with faulty cables, flickering lights, unusual heat, or visible damage.
5 The hand or thumb is positioned incorrectly
Gel cures only where sufficient light reaches it. Curled fingers, thumbs held at an angle, or nails pressed against the lamp base can leave sidewalls and thumb edges underexposed.
Place the hand flat in the position shown by the manufacturer. Some systems instruct users to cure thumbs separately.
6 Gel flooded the cuticle or sidewalls
Pooling near the skin creates a thicker area that may not cure evenly. It also exposes skin to uncured product, increasing the risk of sensitization.
Leave a neat margin around the nail. Remove gel from the skin completely before the hand enters the lamp.
7 The pigment was not mixed as directed
Pigments can settle during storage. Unevenly distributed pigment may create patchy application, and some manufacturers instruct users to shake or roll the bottle before use.
Mix the product only according to its instructions and keep open bottles away from direct sunlight and the curing lamp.
8 Products from incompatible systems were combined
A base from one brand, color from another, top coat from a third, and an unverified lamp may appear to work together, but their curing requirements can differ.
Beginners should start with one documented system. Add products from another line only when their manufacturers confirm compatibility.
9 The gel is old, contaminated, or stored badly
Heat, direct light, a bottle left open near the lamp, contamination, or age can change the product's consistency and performance. Partially cured pieces in the bottle show that light has reached the product.
Replace gel that has become stringy, lumpy, unexpectedly thick, partially cured, or otherwise different from its normal condition.

Why Is Gel Polish Hard on Top but Soft Underneath?
This usually happens when the upper part of a thick gel layer receives enough light to form a firmer surface while the lower portion receives insufficient energy. A very opaque pigment can make light penetration more difficult.
The firm surface should not be treated as proof that the coating is safe to wear. Remove the affected product according to the manufacturer's directions, then retry with thinner coats and a confirmed compatible lamp.
Why Does Gel Polish Wrinkle Under the Lamp?
Wrinkling during or immediately after curing often points to a thick coat, uneven pigment, surface shrinkage, or a lamp-and-product mismatch. The upper surface can begin to harden while softer material underneath shifts, creating ripples.
Remove the wrinkled gel rather than pressing it flat. Apply a fresh, thinner coat only after the nail is clean and the curing system has been checked.

How Long Should Gel Polish Cure?

Can You Apply Another Coat Over Under-Cured Gel?
No. A new layer cannot reliably cure the soft material trapped underneath. It may make the surface look smoother while leaving reactive product enclosed within the manicure.
